New York Fashion Week — Upon arriving at the Maki Oh Fall/Winter 2017 presentation, one could have thought they had entered the wrong room were it not for an electric neon sign that read: OXOSI PRESENTS MAKI OH & THE POPDRUM MUSIC PARTY. Warm vibrant colors and live music courtesy of the OXOSI Fuji Embassadors created a scene reminiscent of a neighborhood party, not your average NYFW presentation. Still, dozens of people arrived early, anticipating the arrival of Amaka Osakwe's latest collection. Still, below the buzzing of the drums, freckled-faced models backstage rushed to get their last minute instructions. Still, the presentation went on.
Twenty-four models of color stood on the tiers of the presentation floor against a background made to replicate 'danfos', the bright yellow buses that can be seen all over the city of Lagos. True to home, more Nigerian nostalgia came in the form of the intricate embroidery of phrases like 'NO STANDING' and 'NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT' on tops of both mesh and shimmery materials. Using a daring combination of colors, prints, and textures, Maki Oh Fall/Winter 2017 portrays a feminine story of undying youth.
It was only right that we'd throw a party after.
