Maki Oh — by Amaka Osakwe
Traditional Nigerian clothing was once literally used to communicate: in carrying on that tradition, Amaka Osakwe is as much the author of her pieces as their designer. Produced using organic dyes and fabrics, Maki Oh’s production sustains not just the environment, but a fading tradition: the technique of Adire-dying, native to Nigeria.
Maki Oh has been nominated for the 2014 LVMH Young Designer Award, and fans of the clothes—and the coded messages therein—include Michelle Obama and Solange Knowles. Previously only available in Lagos and a single stateside boutique, it’s time everyone else can finally join the conversation.
